D12000 Plasma Cutter Parameters: Steel, Aluminum & Copper

The OTC DAIHEN D12000 is a veritable “steel tailor.” As a 120A-class water-cooled heavy-duty air plasma cutting machine, it possesses extremely strong arc compression and ultimate penetration. For different materials (mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, and highly thermally conductive copper alloy), plasma cutting is highly dependent on the perfect synergy of “current, nozzle orifice diameter, cutting speed, and torch standoff height.” This article exclusively compiles the official standard parameter tables for the D12000 cutting all mainstream metals, helping you significantly improve cutting quality and consumable lifespan.

I. Cutting Expert Warning: The “Life & Death” Rules for Selecting Plasma Consumables

Before reviewing the parameter tables below, operators must strictly memorize the following consumable matching principles; otherwise, the nozzle will explode and be ruined the moment the arc is struck:

  • Strictly Prohibit “Overpowering”: The nozzle orifice diameter is strictly designed based on the current level. You absolutely must not install a small-bore 30A nozzle (H839K03) when using a massive 120A current! The immense arc energy cannot escape through the tiny orifice and will instantly melt and destroy the copper nozzle.
  • Avoid “Underpowering”: Conversely, if you use a low 30A current to cut thin plates but install a large-bore 120A nozzle (H839G03), the plasma arc cannot be effectively compressed. The arc will become erratic, broad, and weak, resulting in a very wide kerf with severe dross and slag accumulation.
  • Maintain Correct Torch Standoff Height: Do not drag the nozzle tightly pressed against the steel plate! The “Nozzle Height (2-5mm)” in the parameter tables is crucial; it prevents molten metal blowback from clogging the nozzle orifice during cutting.

II. D12000 Cutting Parameters for Mild Steel & Stainless Steel

The speeds in the table are reference values. During actual operation, observe the direction of the spark spray below the kerf (sparks spraying vertically downward or trailing slightly backward at 10°~15° indicates the optimal cutting speed).

III. D12000 Cutting Parameters for Aluminum Alloys

Aluminum’s thermal conductivity is much higher than steel’s. When cutting aluminum plates, a higher cutting speed is recommended to prevent the kerf edges from melting and sagging.

IV. D12000 Cutting Parameters for Copper & Brass

Because copper’s heat dissipation is at the top among metals, heat is lost extremely quickly during cutting. Therefore, it is not recommended to cut thin copper below 5mm. Start directly from medium-to-thick plates, and you must use a high current of 80A or above for a strong penetration cut.

5.0 80A 80A Nozzle

* Piercing Process Reminder: Because copper is highly prone to sticking and spattering, when cutting copper plates of any thickness, vertical arc ignition in the center of the plate is strictly prohibited! You must start the arc from the outer edge of the plate, or pre-drill a hole with a twist drill before cutting.
